Design & Illustration

My design philosophy combines traditional graphic design and information design as a single process, informed by a thorough technical knowledge of rich media technologies. The following principles guide my design process.

  • Createscreenshot a participatory experience, not just an on-screen print document. Coordinate with traditional-media materials without sharing their limitations.
  • Create an inviting, professional graphical style that reflects well on the client and targets specific goals.
  • Choose an appropriate interaction style, from fun and exploratory to explicit and businesslike. Incorporate variety and interest without creating confusion.
  • Make motion and interactivity part of the design from the earliest sketches, rather than simply adding technology after the design is done.
  • Understand the user and their motivation for using the content. Anticipate their needs, and guide them subtly toward the actions the client wants them to take.
  • Make a large set of information feel small. Don't bombard the user with too many choices at once.
  • Design a visual structure that relates to the information structure. Let the user zero in quickly on the desired information, aware at all times of where she or he is in the hierarchy of the content.
  • Never let special effects and clutter distract or delay the user.

In addition to interactive media and interface design, I create logos and illustrations in 2D or 3D, static or animated, as well as photo manipulations. I can offer a wide range of visual styles by bringing in other team members, including skilled traditional-media artists.

Or, if you're a designer yourself and simply need programming and technical expertise to help bring your designs to life, my design background is still very valuable: it insures that I understand and respect your designs, and will not tamper with your intentions.
